Who doesn’t like to spend the weekend relaxing? I’ve been taking the weekends to unwind from the work week and recharge my batteries, which I think is important for everyone. I spent this past Saturday at Green River Lake near the Holmes Bend Marina. Put me around nature, and I find a peace that settles deep within my soul. No matter how busy life gets, there is plenty of beauty and peace surrounding us – especially in Kentucky. Then add a dash of good music and sprinkle of some delicious food to a weekend, and you have my definition of a perfect weekend.
First, to start it off, I’m going to tell y’all a short, funny story of my trip to Holmes Bend. My husband pulled the truck into the parking lot, and made his way to the top tier parking, which was full of other trucks pulling boats behind them, and they were lined up one behind the other. It was the closest place to the facilities, which tickles me pink. Us ladies do not have it as easy as the gentlemen on the water. Just sayin’.
Anyways, I took care of my business, and walked out of the lady’s restroom, then my husband came out of the men’s. We started down the line of trucks and boats that were there for a fishing tournament, making our way to the end where our truck and boat was parked. My husband went on the other side of the trucks where the driver side doors were, and I stayed on the inside where the passenger doors were. Toward the end of the line, I came to a white truck and popped open the passenger door, then paused as the light popped on like a beacon in the night. Brown leather seats twinkled at me, and I quickly shut the door, then jogged down to the next truck with my head tucked in, refusing to make eye contact with anyone. You see, my truck doesn’t have leather seats… Yeah, you’re tracking now, I started to get in someone else’s truck. My husband thought it was hilarious. Me? Not so much.
After that, the morning went on without hitch. We spent the morning on the lake, casting our lines into the calm water, and I took in the scenery around me. Fall is absolutely beautiful on the lake. The trees surrounding us were turning colors, there was a chill in the air and a thin film of fog clung to the water as fish jumped out of the water throughout the morning as the sun lit up the orange and golden hues of the leaves.
About mid-morning, as we trolled around a point, I noticed a noodle bobbing along in the water at a steady speed. I smiled sweetly at my husband, and he arched his eyebrow, wondering what I was up to, then he noticed the pink styrofoam bobbing along, and he shook his head. We’ve been married fourteen years, so he knows what I wanted. This girl needs to see what kind of fish is at the end of the line of that noodle. Have to. Have to. Have to. I can’t help it. It’s a disease. Straight up sickness or something.
Needless to say, he caved. He always caves. He loves me, and I know that a part of him is amused by it as we track down the bobbing pink noodle in the water. As we near it, I lay down on the deck of the bow, stretch out my short arms, and grab it. I smile back at my husband as I lift it out of the water. A blue catfish wiggles in front of me, dangling from the line, as I say hello, then put it back in the water.
If you’re in the area, attending a concert at Green River Live in Summersville or whatever you might be doing and do not want to stay at a hotel, there are cabins you can rent at Holmes Bend as well. Not too far from Green River Lake, there is a pizza and wing place that we like to stop in at, it’s called, Wings Pizza N Things. I usually get the buffalo chicken pizza, which is one of my favorites, and I’d highly recommend it.
